I have just finished Sea of Memories. Every now and then you come across a book that is ‘unputdownable’, totally absorbing and you become as immersed in the story and characters as if you were part of it! This book is one of them! Chosen completely at random, this will be among my Top 5 reads.

Dear Tanya,

I’m so pleased! The Ile de Re is still a magical place, even if it is a bit busier these days than it would have been when Ella first visited. I hope you get there and that you will enjoy it. Remember to look out for the salted caramel ice cream 🙂

Best wishes,

Hi Fiona – I absolutely loved The Beekeepers Promise but Sea of Memories topped it!!!!! Best book I’ve read in a long time. What a beautiful story – literally had tears streaming reading the last few pages…..didn’t want it to end! Both such amazing stories – can’t wait for your next book!!!!!!

Dear Lara,

I’m so delighted to hear from you and to know how much you’ve loved both The Beekeeper’s Promise and Sea of Memories.

I’m hard at work on the next book right now. I can’t say much more at the moment, other than that it’s the sister book to The Beekeeper’s Promise, telling the story of what Mireille got up to in Paris in the war years and that it will be coming out next year.

Thank you for getting in touch. And happy reading!
All the best,
Fiona x

Hi Fiona!
Please could you give me the chronology of your five books, as in publication dates?
Do the books need to be read in chronological order?
Thank you so much.
Andrew

Dear Andrew,

Thank you for getting in touch. The order in which I wrote the books is:
1. The French for Love
2. The French for Always
3. The French for Christmas
4. Sea of Memories
5. The Beekeeper’s Promise
The are all intended to be able to be read as stand-alone books, but having said that if you read them in order of publication you will see a thread of interconnected characters and overlapping lives (as in any community), and recognise some references and stories from the books that went before. The only exception to this is Sea of Memories, in which the characters and setting are entirely separate from the other 4 books.

Happy reading, ad I hope you enjoy the books.
With best wishes,
Fiona

I haven’t been able to find whether Ella’s story in Sea of Memories is based on a real person. Was it?

Dear Mary,

No, Ella’s story is entirely fictional. I was inspired to write the book after listening to my grandmother’s reminiscences about Edinburgh in the war years, and I lived in France for several years so was able to knit these two settings together as the backdrop to Ella’s life. I have also tried to make any references to historical events as accurate as possible. But the characters and their lives are of my own making.

With best wishes,
Fiona

I have just finished reading Sea of Memories. And must leave a review of this beautiful book. The style and mix of era’s is so perfect. I admit to both shedding a tear, & wanting to visit the island!

I’ve just finished reading The French for Christmas and have loved every word of it. What a beautiful story and I was transported to France through your wonderful descriptions of the house and the hamlet. It made me smile and it made me cry but best of all were your descriptions of the market, the food and menus. I’m inspired once again to get cooking.
Earlier this summer I read Memories of the Sea and once again I was transported to Ile De Re, somewhere I’ve always wanted to visit. A fabulous book which would make a wonderful TV play.
Thank you.

Our Bookclub read A sea of Memories. We all loved the book but had differing opinions about the relationship between Ella and Christophe. Was a sexual relationship implied?

Hi Joyce, I’m glad to hear how much you all loved Sea of Memories. The answer to your question is that it’s up to each individual reader to decide. Their relationship was so innocent at the beginning, and based on a deeper love at the end. But as for what happened in between… imagine two young people spending a summer night in the dunes by the beach, beneath a canopy of stars and the answer will come to you!
With best wishes,
Fiona
